The desire to have a dog had been dormant within us for a long time. But instead of going to a breeder, we consciously decided to give a dog from an animal shelter a new home. Our choice fell on the approximately 6-year-old Gretty from Bulgaria:
Why from abroad? There are many dogs waiting for a new home in German animal shelters, but the situation in countries like Bulgaria is often even more dramatic. Many dogs there live on the streets or in overcrowded shelters.
The beginning: The search for the right club
While searching for a suitable club, we came across the TSV-Straßenpfoten eV. What immediately convinced us was the open and direct communication. On the website we found a lot of information about the dogs and the work of the association. Also the possibility to self-disclosure We found it very practical to fill out the form online. This enabled the association to get an initial impression of us and our living conditions.
Then we discovered Gretty.
Gretty – love at first sight
My girlfriend took over the search for our dream dog. On the TSV-Straßenpfoten website she discovered GrettyThe description and the photos touched us immediately. We contacted the club and received further information about the process, what we should pay attention to, etc. It quickly became clear: Gretty should move in with us!
The date was set: the arrival in Germany
The transport from Bulgaria to Germany was of course a long journey for Gretty. The association organized everything and kept us up to date. Finally the time had come: Gretty arrived at the pick-up station. We were very excited and curious to finally meet our new family member. The first moment was indescribable! Gretty was a little shy at first, but quickly thawed out within a few days.
The first days and weeks
The first few days and weeks were naturally a bit of an adjustment for Gretty. Everything was new and strange. Even doors, windows and stairs were completely new to her... We gave her plenty of time to settle in and get used to us. We also had to practice walking on a leash, of course. But Gretty learned quickly and made great progress. It was wonderful to see how she increasingly trusted us. Her growing affection and gratitude towards us was clearly noticeable and touched us deeply.
Our conclusion
We don't regret our decision to adopt from abroad for a second! Gretty has enriched our lives and we are so happy to have given her a loving home. Of course, giving a dog from an animal shelter a new life is a lot of work. But it's worth it!
Our tip: If you are also considering a dog to adopt, find out more about the different clubs and the adoption process. We are completely satisfied and happy with TSV Straßenpfoten eV. And don't be discouraged if it doesn't work out right away. The right dog will come to you!
